Euroopan eläinlääkärit ja lääkärit One health -teeman äärellä

The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) and the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME) have come together to collaborate and to jointly act in recognition of the concept of ‘One Health’.

FVE and CPME recognise the benefits of a ‘One Health’ concept and commit themselves to close cooperation. This approach aims to expand interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of healthcare for humans, animals and the environment. The synergism allows advancing health care by improving medical education and clinical care, accelerating biomedical research discoveries, enhancing public health efficacy, and expeditiously expanding the scientific knowledge base.

Health professionals have recognised the value and necessity of their close collaboration at all levels; education, medical and veterinary practice, national and international collaboration. A first memorandum between CPME and FVE focused on fighting antimicrobial resistance and was agreed in January 2013 and was expanded further in 2015.

In this framework the two professions reiterate their commitment to work together to ensure One Health in practice.

On this special occasion of the 1st celebration of the “ONE HEALTH DAY”, doctors and veterinarians would like to particularly highlight the importance of bringing the One Health concept across to future health professionals. That was one of the core conclusions of the CPME-FVE conference on the World Health Day of 2014.

CMPE President, Dr Jacques de Haller, said: “The fight against antimicrobial resistance is central to our joint agreement as AMR necessitates a joint response both in human and animal health. The problem cannot be underestimated anymore as it is growing rapidly, and immediate action is needed on a very large scale if we want to reverse current trends. Doctors and Veterinarians need to be together to promote prudent prescription of antibiotics, as an inappropriate use is the main cause of the spread of resistance.”

FVE President, Dr Rafael Laguens, said: “FVE recognises the need for close collaboration of the veterinary and medical students starting from the university. We have particularly welcomed the OIE recommendations of the 4th Global Conference on Veterinary Education calling for the OIE Member countries to consider common training with other professions to motivate close collaboration also in students’ future professional life. We would like to reiterate our commitment towards that direction.”
